Skyword Ministries is the only authorized Christian Protestant chaplaincy privileged to serve the Chicago O’Hare and Midway airport communities. Our volunteer Chaplain team of approximately 30 chaplains conducts multiple chapel services every Sunday and on Christian holidays at both airports. Dr. Hutz H. Hertzberg serves as the Senior Protestant Chaplain and gives overall leadership to this ministry. The Moody Church serves as the officially recognized sponsoring judicatory for the Protestant chapel ministry at O’Hare and Midway. Skyword Ministries is the incorporated name of this ministry, and is a recognized 501(c)3 organization.
God has wonderfully touched the lives of a multitude of passengers, airport employees, and visitors for over five decades through the airport chapels. But there is much more to be done – we invite you to participate and partner with us!

Skyword Ministries is the incorporated organizational name for the Christian Protestant Chapel ministry at the interfaith chapels of O’Hare and Midway airports. It is the only authorized and approved Protestant ministry at both airports. Our team is made up of volunteers that include people from many backgrounds and vocations including seminary professors, pastors, military chaplains, business professionals, and ministry leaders. Our mission is to impact Chicago airline and airport personnel and passengers with the transforming message of the gospel.
Skyword Ministries provides:
- Biblically-based worship
- Practical ministry experience for future pastors and ministry leaders
- Christ-centered teaching and counsel
- Bibles and quality Christian literature
- Intercessory prayer
- Discipleship, mentoring, and leadership training
Two to four-person teams conduct the four weekly chapel services. Three varieties of chaplains make up our team. The Senior Protestant Chaplain oversees and provides leadership for every aspect of the ministry, including the recruitment of chaplains, vision casting, administration, and church relations. The Associate Chaplains are ordained and/or licensed clergy. They preach and provide leadership for the individual chapel services. The Assistant Chaplains assist with set-up, scripture reading, prayer time, welcoming of guests, making announcements, etc.
Attendees of our services include individuals from all around the world and every walk of life including international business leaders, college professors, missionaries, professional athletes, military personnel, students, airline pilots, flight attendants, baggage handlers and more. Approximately 50% are Christian while the remainder are non-Christian, and in some cases, completely un-churched. Two-thirds of our attendees are passengers; the rest are airport or airline personnel.
We have the opportunity to reach thousands of people with the good news of the Gospel, from the employees of the airlines and airports to military personnel leaving or returning from deployment to people from every culture, socio-economic background, race and education level.
