There’s a well-known African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” It even made it into the recent Mufasa: The Lion King movie—CGI song and dance included. This proverb is a reminder of the power of “together,” and that teamwork eclipses autonomy over the long haul.

At the end of Acts 2, we see the early church embracing the wisdom of following Jesus together. As they seek to grow in faith and draw strength and encouragement for life, they find that they are better together and need each other deeply. It turns out that following Jesus isn’t a solo event, but a team sport.

Our late modern Western culture prizes individuality and autonomy to the extreme. The kind of thick community we see in the early church is deeply subversive in our cultural moment. There is a beauty here we need. In a world where everyone is going their own way, we have a chance, as followers of Jesus Christ, to discover the wonder of interdependent family life as the people of God. So let’s lean in and discover what it means to be together on this Journey of a Lifetime! Because we are loved, more than we know.
