The Gospel & The Fruit, Part 2

John Owen: The choicest believers who are assuredly freed from the condemning power of sin, ought yet to make it their business all their days to mortify the indwelling power of sin. The principle cause of this duty mentioned is the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of God, that “dwells in us,” that “quickens us.” It is the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of adoption, the Spirit that makes intercession for us. All other ways of mortification are in vain, all helps leave us helpless; it must be done by the Spirit. Mortification from a self-strength, carried on by ways of self invention, unto the end of a self-righteousness, is the soul and substance of all false religion in the world.

Galatians 5:22-26

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
