When you think of Jesus, how do you see Him? Do you picture Him from one of the scenes in the Gospels? Perhaps as an infant in the manger, or washing His disciples’ feet, or maybe suffering on the cross for your sins?

Years ago, I heard a sermon entitled, “Image is Everything.” The title was borrowed from a camera commercial but applied to the presentation of Jesus in the book of Revelation. The sermon’s main point was that how we view Jesus has a profound impact on how we love, worship, and obey Him.

Consider the picture of Jesus in Revelation 19: “Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadem…He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God….On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”

We see Jesus rightly when we embrace Him as He truly is: humble, yet majestic; merciful, yet just; a carpenter and the King; the Suffering Servant and the Sovereign One. I find it fascinating that when John describes his response to the appearance of Jesus in Revelation, he wrote: “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.” Think about that. Jesus’ majesty, holiness, and power were undiminished, and John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was overwhelmed.

How blessed we are when we see Jesus as He is and live in light of that glorious truth.

For His glory,

Bill Bertsche
