Think About What You Think About!

Room 303 | Mary Lowman

When was the last time you thought about your thought life? Probably not recently if ever! Most Christians don’t feel the need to change their thought patterns. Right thinking, however, is probably the greatest need most of us have, whether we feel it or not.

In this Summer Seminar, we’ll take a close look at what the Bible has to say about what you think about—and it’s a lot! The first session will focus on the power of your thought life and how we are challenged as believers to think differently. In the second session, we’ll discuss the guardrails that the Bible puts in place for our thought patterns. And finally, in session three, we’ll see practical ways we can change our lives and improve our effectiveness for Christ by changing our thought patterns.

Intro to Apologetics

Room 304 | Karl Johnson

Talking about your faith in Jesus Christ can be difficult today. We live in post-Christian times when the influence of evangelical Christianity is waning, and while secularism and skepticism seem to be the default worldviews. On top of that, political polarization has often reduced people’s view of Christianity to a political position. How can we engage in faith conversations today?

Week 1: What is Apologetics?
Week 2: Communicating: It’s Complicated
Week 3: Conversational Apologetics

Essential Doctrines

Clarkview | Stephen Farish

In the Essential Doctrines class, we will be examining the teaching of Scripture concerning those doctrines which distinguish Christianity as “the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).  Our prayer is that God in his grace through this seminar will open the “eyes of our hearts” to the display of his spiritual beauty and worth in the Bible (Psalm 27:4; Ephesians 1:18), in such a way that we his people would experience life-transforming delight through our apprehension of God’s stunning glory (Psalm 16:11).  The topics we will cover this year, Lord willing, include the following:

  • July 13: The Doctrine of Providence: Creation
  • July 20: The Doctrine of the Good and Evil Angels
  • July 27: The Doctrine of the Covenants

Spiritual Warfare

Room 304 | Karl Johnson

We tend to neglect the spiritual aspects of life. But the Bible affirms that there is a cosmic, spiritual struggle going on daily, and that our adversary seeks to “devour” us. Using C.S. Lewis’s famous book The Screwtape Letters, we will explore and discuss the methods and tactics that our adversary uses to disrupt our lives and our faith. A study guide will be provided, but participants must acquire their own copy of The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis (any edition is fine).

Week 1: A Brief Introduction
Week 2: The Screwtape Letters 1-15

In these discussions, attention will be given to both the blessings and dangers of technology.

Is The Bible Reliable?

Room 307 | Rob Marcello

How we know about Jesus is through the words of scripture, but are they reliable, and are they worthy of our trust? In these seminars, we will discuss the reliability of the text of the New Testament, diving into the history of scribes and manuscripts. Second, we will look at the books of the Bible, answering the question, “Why did some books make it and why were others not included?” Finally, we will look at the truthfulness of the Bible’s accounts and why we can trust what it says.
