In the first half of the book of Esther, everything seems to be going from bad to worse. Under the pressures of exile, the Jews have begun to lose their confidence in God. They’re blending in with Persian society to survive. Esther is orphaned. Mordecai is scared. The king gets whatever he wants. Haman unleashes his diabolical plot.
But in chapter six, everything begins to change. This is the turning of the tide. The great reversal is underway. And through a series of “coincidences,“ Esther and Mordecai begin to realize they are not alone. The same God who has shown up for Israel down through the ages is still working even now. God shows that they can trust Him, even as they wait. He gives them small moments of grace to cling to as they wait for the full and final coming redemption.
That’s where you and I live: in the waiting. God gives us graces today, as we wait for the fullness of redemption to come. One day everything will be set to rights. Everything broken will be mended. Everything marred will become beautiful. Everything sad will come untrue. But in the meantime, God continues to cultivate our trust while we’re waiting.
So let’s fix our eyes on Jesus today, and cling to His grace, as we wait for all that is yet to come. For we are loved, more than we know!
