It’s relatively easy to trust God when the birds are singing, the flowers are in color, and the sun is shining. It’s in the dark that trusting God becomes a challenge. How do you trust God when everything feels unhinged? When evil seems to triumph? When enemies plot against us? When the night is unrelenting? What’s the secret of trusting God in the dark?

In Acts 12, the darkness grows so thick, it seems almost unbearable. The political powers gather like a fierce storm brooding over the early church. Herod strikes at the leadership core. Remember Peter, James, and John—the three in Jesus’ inner circle? Herod kills James. Then he arrests Peter. He’s striking at the heart of church leadership. It’s a dark night. The darkest the church has ever experienced.

In that darkest night, Peter and the early church show us the secret to trusting God. There are five life-changing lessons we can learn from their example, lessons that will help us grow to trust God in the dark as well.

I don’t know what kind of dark night you’re under, but I do know that the God who was with Peter and the early church in their dark night is the same God who is with us in ours. Let’s learn to trust Him afresh. Because even in the dark, we are loved, more than we know!
