Years ago, I heard a friend repeatedly quote the second part of Proverbs 10:8 after saying something she regretted, “A chattering fool comes to ruin.” It was both funny and wise at the same time. What are the verses of Scripture that most guide your walk with the Lord?

By God’s grace, I have been taught God’s Word from a young age so there are many verses that have guided me. Here are a few:

  • Psalm 16:11 reveals the powerful truth that God’s presence brings eternal joy.
  • Psalm 103 recounts many of the reasons the Lord is worthy of our worship.
  • Psalm 19 beautifully articulates how great a treasure God’s Word is.
  • Matthew 6:33 simplifies the Christian life: seek the Lord first.
  • Matthew 22:36–40 tells us what God wants most from us: our love.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises us that God gives us the strength to overcome any temptation.
  • James 1 teaches us that trials are designed by God to make us more like Jesus.
  • And the book of Revelation reminds us that God wins in the end through Christ!

I feel a little guilty about leaving out so many amazing and life-transforming verses, but then I comfort myself with 1 John 1:9 and the forgiveness we have in Christ!

A former pastor of mine was said, “You cannot be profoundly changed by what you do not know.” I think about that when I consider the promises and wisdom in God’s Word that do not bring the comfort or guidance God intends because we do not know His Word well enough.

I would like to encourage you to do three things. First, make reading God’s Word a top priority in your life. Second, make your own Scripture list that guides your walk with the Lord. And third, share your list with others— especially young people who will be blessed for many years with these truths.

Life can be very hard. Let’s not make it harder than it already is by missing out on all that God has for us in His Word.

God bless you!
