Although Jesus was fully God, He still had to confront temptation during His ministry on earth, just like the rest of us.  What can we learn from Jesus’ trial in the wilderness? We see a picture of Jesus’ humanity here, and we also learn how we can better face temptation. Matthew’s purpose in writing this passage is to highlight Jesus’ true identity, and to link Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament. All three temptations are linked to lessons from Israel’s past and point towards an amazing revelation about Jesus: where Israel failed, Jesus is the true and better Israel; where Adam failed, Jesus is the true and better Adam. Ultimately, Jesus is both the model and the means to overcome temptation.
