Scripture Reading 1 Peter 5:1–7 (ESV) Sandy Long

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, For “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Statement of Faith

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried…

The third day He arose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,

whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, God's holy church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

(This statement of faith is adapted from The Apostles' Creed )

Pastor to People

This morning we once again have the privilege of coming to the “Lord's Table,” otherwise known as Communion. Scripture is very clear that we are to examine ourselves before the Lord as we prepare to partake of the elements:

“ Let a person examine himself then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 9:28-29)

We also come to the table of Christ to remember His sacrifice on our behalf: the breaking of His body and the pouring out of His blood that we might be forgiven of our sins. Begin now to prepare yourself for this very significant time when we partake together.

With thanksgiving for Christ and you,

Hutz H. Hertzberg
